I love covers! And remixes.

Bonus points if the origin is lousy.

EXAMPLES, YAY.

Katy Perry kissed a girl and no one cared!

And then Cobra Starship kissed a boy!

And then Ivri Leder kissed a girl! Except he's sad about that and worries what his boyfriend will think.

Bonus, John Barrowman in heels and package pants!

"Western Civilisation is on the wrong path

On November 11 we pay tribute to the members of the armed forces who gave up their lives so that the rest of us could live ours in freedom. We might have expected that such ultimate selflessness and self-sacrifice might have conferred upon our societies the wisdom to truly value life and liberty.

Unfortunately, after World War II the West turned its back on its hard-won freedom and voluntarily succumbed to a dictatorship of relativism that recognises nothing as being morally definitive. The result has been life-repudiating legislation that sanctions everything from contraception and prostitution to homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, genetic manipulation and euthanasia.

Today the West cries for liberation from the tyranny of modernity being imposed by liberal governments as they seek new and ingenious ways of undermining morality and embracing nihilism. Is this the path western civilisation wishes to traverse?"

Letter by Paul Kokoski printed in the Barbados Advocate newspaper on Wednesday Nov 9th 2011.

*****

This is *exactly* the kind of bullshit you hear from the older generations*. I don't know this guy; I can't guarantee he's a local, but those opinions certainly fit. This sort of 'what suits my straight middle-aged male backside should suit everyone and if it doesn't suit you then YOU ARE WRONG' seems to be the global default and it makes me tired. NOT that everyone's like this, just that too many of the people in power are. Someone told them something when they were little and impressionable and they took it in and set it firmly and have no interest in re-examining or altering it. There is just so much wrong with Kokoski's whine/rant that I don't know where to start. The UN has stated that restricting a woman's access to birth control violates her human rights, many societies allow same-sex marriage and look how the buildings are still standing and the cows still give milk! Outlawing abortion doesn't stop it from happening, it just stops *safe* abortions from happening. All outlawing abortion does is *kill women*. FFS there's a big difference between 'Doc this hurts and is going to kill me slowly over the next two months, how about sparing me that?' and murder. Genetic manipulation covers so much you may as well just say you don't understand biology and are frightened by it. You know what? I'm still behind on my nano. And I'm going to throw some extra gay, genderfuck, and feminism in, Mr Kokoski, just for you.

*I don't just mean people in their nineties. I mean my 53 year old uncle and many others.

The Life Gets Better project.

I am so glad I'm not in high school anymore! And you know, It *does* get better. I'm still looking for work but I have my family, my cat, the glorious view from my balcony, writing projects to finish, good friends. Life, yo \o/

EDIT

This is so brief because I have to go to bed, get up early, and write! Werewolfbigbang is due Saturday eek!

This turned into a linkthingy. Oops?

  • Recent lj exchange has me thinking about artsy people and the things we do to ourselves. It's hard enough at best because no matter how good we are it *never* matches what we had in our head, whatever momentary passion or dumbstruck moment of beauty or yearning--what we produce *never* matches the glory of its inception (:3)(no srsly). So you've already got that grief to deal with. Then there's the eternal learning curve: it's always given me hope that I will always have something to work towards in my craft but fuckaduck, ain't no place to rest. Sometimes I wish the damned thing would write itself! Especially the ones I more want to *read* than write that I have to write because I can't find it anywhere XD An you lie awake because Oh look I didn't write enough today. Ever.

You guys, we gotta stop bullying ourselves. Because that's totally what it is! I was *really* bad with that during my last few years of school and I did some serious shit to my health because of it. I tried to train the voice in the back of my head with the rule that I wasn't allowed to tell myself anything I wouldn't tell my friends. No more calling myself a moron etc. over not getting enough done.

  • The story of Nikola Tesla as told by a really drunk dude. Funnier than it sounds XD

  • Mighty Gabby's 'Emmerton': I've had it stuck in my head lately for the Esther story. I love this character *so much* you guys, and it's past time we had an elderly black protag for heroic high fantasy :3

The government tore the village down to make a landfill. This is Gabby's lament for his home.

  • And now, linkdump! Apologies to those on my twitter who have seen some/most of these already <3
